Originally from Indio, CA Patrick became interested in music at a young age, finding solace and respite in the music-sounds of his upbringing. “I remember when I first heard rapper’s delight, it impacted me.” In his junior year of high school, he began to DJ under the name DJ Jammer, Jamming out at house party's and events. “I bought my first set of Technics 1200 turntables with my crew in 1984, and I became interested in making beats in 1986.” Purchasing an E-MU Turbo SP-12 that year, was the first drum machine that Patrick Jammer was able to sample from records, opening up a whole new level of respect and passion for turntablism and production art.
In 1994 the prayers of Patrick's family over him were answered, was born again by reading scripture. “I was open to researching what the Bible had to say about many various topics. For me, it was a radical transformation that took place; my whole worldview was flipped upside down." This theological change was a conflict to his cultural upbringing at first, " I was from the Hiphop culture, and I didn’t know there were Christians that did hip hop, because there was no internet at the time. I did find out about Christian hip hop through the Bible bookstores of the time.”
He moved to the LA area in the mid 1990’s, and shortly after became involved in Gospel-ministry. “I wanted to reach out to other Christians and unbelievers through music and ministry, so in 2002 I created the Headz Up Ministry. I called myself DJ Elder, not just because I was older than most Christians in Hiphop, but it was an honorable title in scripture in my understanding.” Headz Up FM was one of the first internet radio stations that ran 24hr Christian Hiphop from 2006 until 2018. In the culture and on the west-coast streets Headz Up quickly became legendary for introducing listeners to underground Christ-centered Hiphop music, growing a dedicated fanbase from the roots up.
Currently, DJ Elder still produces and composes. “My current tools of the trade are my MPC 60ii that I bought in 1992, an SP-1200, and an Isla Instruments S2400. I also have 2 technics 1200s, and a Rane One Mixer. I also use a computer DAW to get ideas going.”
Elder feels honored be a part of the Shadow of the Locust collective. “I have known them for decades, and they have always impacted me positively, so to join them officially is very humbling.” - and the SOTL Crew feels the same about Elder who's contribution to the CHH community has been nothing less than remarkable!
